Organize It
How do you host a Make Something Day party?
It’s as easy as gathering a few friends, a few supplies, some great ideas and pulling out your Thanksgiving leftovers.
Think ahead of time about what you want to make, and begin to gather your supplies. Check out the list below to help you start thinking of what could be turned into a gift. Another great place to start scouting out is the “free” section on Craig’s List, someones old nightstand can be re-painted, turned into a mosaic project, or decoupaged into a great new piece of furniture. Garage sales and Thrift Stores are another inexpensive way to gather great one of a kind supplies.
Invite your friends, inspiration many times comes from being surrounded by other ideas. Think about gifts that you can make assembly line style or everyone can work on their own creation. Have all of your friends bring some snacks and drinks to share along with their supplies and ideas.
For some great ideas, keep coming back to the Make Something Day blog. You can also join the Facebook group, and share ideas of your own or ask questions by starting a new discussion topic.
Start Collecting:
- scraps of fabric (old clothes, drapes, tableclothes, etc. can be re-purposed too)
- scraps of paper
- magazines (even all of those holiday catalogs that are arriving in the mail)
- used holiday cards or postcards
- buttons, rhinestones, beads (think about re-making a vintage necklace that has lost some beads, or turning an earring without its pair into a great brooch or ring)
- old books, dictionaries, encyclopedias
- belts (make great purse handles)
- jars (used olive jars or spaghetti jars can be cleaned and re-purposed)
- painting surfaces - old canvases can be painted white again, wooden trivets, scraps of plywood, pie tins (almost anything can become a unique canvas)
- be creative, if you think you might be able to use it throw it in a Make Something Day collection box
